About the Close to Home Campaign
Introduction
Opiate abuse is epidemic in our state. Maine is among the states with the highest rate of opiate addiction in the nation. The Acadia Hospital has responded to the increased need for substance abuse treatment by expanding services and improving access through the Paths to Recovery program.
While Acadia has been providing some educational offerings to various segments of the communities on an ongoing basis, the hospital and its many community and media partners (listed below) have decided to create a dynamic multi-year education campaign that will bring awareness to a new level.
Goals
Using various communications tools the campaign will provide a clear message about the dangers of opiate abuse that will raise awareness among the citizens of Maine. The campaign will also provide resources for individuals who want to learn more about opiate addiction and access treatment.
Strategy
The campaign will use a combination of mass media, educational forums and targeted communications to educate and empower various audiences such as youth, parents, teachers, employers, and healthcare providers over two years.
Close to Home will not only provide educational information but will cross-promote the new 211 statewide number as a way for individuals to access treatment. In this way Acadia and its partners will be providing a true public service.
Our campaign partners include state agencies and organizations who share our concern about the growing opiate abuse problem in Maine. Through collaboration the campaign’s message will have a broader reach and the potential for raising awareness increases.
